NEPAL'S anti-corruption authority has come up with a novel solution to rampant bribe-taking at the country's only international airport - the pocketless trouser.
The authority said it was issuing the new, bribe-proof garment to all airport officials after uncovering widespread corruption at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport.

this is ridiculous; can't they learn from singapore? surely there are better ways to stamp out corruption. They are likely to get around this by creating their own pockets or even leaving it in their bags. there are so many ways of getting around this....have they not heard of underwear?

not every country is as efficient as singapore. In Singapore's case, there was a zero tolerance policy from the beginning, with the old guard. In countries like Nepal, when corruption is endemic, it is more difficult to deal with the problem. I think this is a novel idea, one which is within their means; they are dealing with the problem the best way they can, so let's give them a chance.

The idea has its merit in that it could deter corruption in the short run. However, it is no magic bullet and I do hope it is only an interim measure while they seek to redress the situation. Surely, the good old "educating them" and "imposing deterrent sentences" would have come up as solutions in their brainstorming....if not, i am afraid, they are not going to see much success.
